Gone, but Never Forgotten-Rebuilding the New York Skyline

As we remember the tragedy that forever changed the New York skyline on Sept. 11, 2001, we also look toward the future.

Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives during the attacks and our nation was changed forever. Loved ones were lost, but faith and patriotism grew. Many memorials have been put in place, including the Tribute in Light and the more recent National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.

Now, 13 years later, the One World Trade Center (1 WTC) will open at the conclusion of 2014. It stands at a symbolic height of 1,776 feet and references the year the Declaration of Independence was signed (CNN, 2013). It currently stands as the fourth-tallest skyscraper in the world.

Ground was broken for 1 WTC in May 2006, with a formal ceremony. The architectural plans for the lobby were drawn by architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The plan called for the use of 316L premium stainless steel plate to be used for the cable wall. O’Neal Flat Rolled Metals (OFR Metals) was honored to supply the American-made stainless steel used for the project.

The original twin towers may have fallen, but out of the rubble the new 1 WTC was erected. It signifies the strength and courage of the American people. OFR Metals is proud to play a small role in building a brighter future for our nation.

Our thoughts are with the fallen and their families. We also want to thank all the armed forces, firefighters, and law enforcement who have served or are currently serving our great nation.

Make the Switch to Paperless Billing

O’Neal Flat Rolled Metals (OFR Metals) is going green and making the switch to paperless billing. While customers can still receive their bills and invoices through the postal service, the credit department is making the push towards digital services.

“We are hoping to provide customers with easy access to invoices while reducing paperwork,” said Cyndi Wallin, Corporate Credit Manager for OFR Metals. “It will be beneficial to our customers as well as OFR Metals to reduce costs and create efficiencies.”

OFR Metals wants to help its customers save money and time with the paperless billing program. A lean objective of the program is to cut waste by reducing paper product usage. The push to paperless billing also works to protect the environment. Every customer that signs up for paperless billing is saving trees. Nearly one billion trees worth of paper is thrown away each year in the U.S. alone.

The credit department currently estimates 20% of customers have made the switch to paperless. Wallin said she would like to see that number go up to 50% by the end of 2014. Current customers can expect to receive inserts with their next invoice that will share information on how you can switch to paperless billing, eInvoicing and online bill pay. There are three ways to switch to paperless billing or to receive more information:

  •  Call the corporate headquarters at 1.800.336.3365 and ask for your credit representative.
  •  Email accounts receivable at
  •  Visit the credit page to contact your credit representative or to pay your bill online.

Enrollment in paperless billing will allow customers to receive their invoice faster, pay bills without paperwork and help reduce waste.

OFR Metals Up to Bat for the MLB

The 2014 MLB season, which began March 30, is in full swing. The New York Yankees are celebrating their fifth year in the New Yankee Stadium and bidding farewell to All-Star Derek Jeter after this season.

The New Yankee Stadium opened its doors in 2009. During construction, O’Neal Flat Rolled Metals (OFR Metals) supplied a customer the 201, 301, and 430 stainless steel products that were used in many of the snack bars and beer stands. The long-time customer specializes in under bar equipment, including bottle, glass and keg chillers.

“When the stadium was being built the owner’s son mentioned to me that some of our stainless was going into the stadium,” said Len Russo, OFR Metals outside sales representative. “To see that one of our long-time customers, over 20 years of service, was working on this kind of a project using our material was really impressive.”

The New Yankee Stadium, also known as “The House that Jeter Built,” was a $1.5 billion project. The stadium pays homage to Yankee history by incorporating similar design elements to the previous stadium. This is second-most expensive stadium ever built, behind the MetLife Stadium home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets.
